Nokia have at last grasped the nettle and decided to take on Sony Ericsson in the area of a music phone. This should be exciting.
The 5300 XpressMusic is a compact slider phone that is unashamedly a music phone. Nokia have pulled out the stops to ensure it doesn’t disappoint and have largely succeeded.
The phone wears its character and function on the sleeve. Literally. The dedicated music keys (start, pause, rewind, forward), are easily accessible. The music player performs quite well and supports a wide range of file formats. A quality headset is supplied with the phone. However, if you aren’t satisfied with that, you can plug your own headphone via an adapter. A nice touch. You can also go wireless with an optional Bluetooth headset.
The bundled microSD card size depends on the package. Our only gripe is the location of the card which is behind the battery cover which might be a tard annoying. Expandabilty is quite decent at up to 2 Gb. This should allow storage of up to 500 MP3 tracks at high quality.
There is also a built-in FM radio.
The phone display is a 5 cm 262K TFT high quality screen. The camera is a passable 1.3MP so if this is very important to you, you may need to have a careful think.
Beyond that the phone performs quite well and is kitted with all the now standard connectivity including Bluetooth, Infrared, USB and EDGE for internet access. There is a comprehensive personal organiser, speakerphone, messaging including SMS, MMS and even audio messaging.
Overall, this is a really good addition to the Nokia stable and should prove popular.
