This is another offering from Samsung in their D-series. It is, supposedly, a successor to the D600. Sign of the times considering the latter has been around for only a few short months. You can’t sit on your laurels.
So, what do we make of this one? Aesthetics first. The D800 looks stunning. Ok, that is an absolute statement but it is true, trust me. It has the ultimate understated look of class with its smooth black finish and it is stunningly (that word again) thin at just 15mm. Like its older sisters, the D500 and D600, it sports a sliding mechanism and this is ultra-smooth. Underneath, there is a flat keypad, clearly a trade-off to keep it as slinky as it is. That does take a bit of getting used to. All the now essential features are packed in the D800. These include a camera (we will come back to this), 262K TFT, multimedia player (with bundled stereo headset) and connectivity in the form of Bluetooth, PictBridge™, USB 2.0, GPRS, WAP and even TV-out. Other features include an internal 80 Mb memory, voice recorder, voice-dialling, speakerphone and a few more.
What we could not understand is that the Samsung D800’s camera is 1.3MP! Samsung’s thinking here is hard to understand after they had equipped its predecessor (the D600) with a much better performing 2MP camera. Whichever way you look at it, this is a mistake on the part of Samsung especially since this phone will definitely appeal to the young, to whom, the camera is an important part of the device. Having said that, the display is exceptionally bright which helps to temper this disappointment.
It is also slightly disappointing that there is no slot for memory expansion but that is an understandable compromise to keep the phone this thin. All that said, we have to conclude that the Samsung D800 will almost certainly prove a hit as the full bundle amounts to an absolutely beautiful phone and a top-notch performer.
